 Now accepting applications for the

WELL Legacy / Wade Edwards Fund Scholarship 2026

Established through the Broughton Capital Foundation

High school is no small feat. It is four years of early mornings, late nights, hard-won lessons, and quiet acts of resilience that rarely make the headlines — but matter enormously. The seniors in our community have shown up, pushed through, and grown into young people with ambitions that stretch far beyond these hallways. Now, as they stand at the threshold of what comes next, they deserve our support, our recognition, and our investment.

The WELL Legacy / Wade Edwards Fund Scholarship was created to celebrate the bold and purposeful pathways of Broughton’s first-generation college students, students pursuing a technical or community college pathway or students choosing to attend a Historically Black College or University.

This $1,000 scholarship reflects a commitment to the futures these students have already begun to build.  A total of two scholarships may be awarded to two Broughton Class of 2026 graduates.

About This Scholarship

This scholarship honors the mission of the WELL — to provide accessible achievement and enrichment opportunities for the high school community to pursue enduring academic, personal, and career success. It is awarded annually to a graduating senior at Broughton who embodies that spirit and is taking a bold step into their next chapter.

Award Amount: $1,000 (non-renewable)

Eligible recipients are Broughton Seniors who are:

  • First-generation college students (the first in their family to attend a four-year college or university), or

  • Enrolling at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), or

  • Attending a technical college or community college

All qualifying student applicants may apply.  Application deadline is May 12, 2026.  Apply here. Up to two scholarships may be awarded for two Broughton seniors.  Selectees will be notified by May 22, 2026.

Families and Faculty, would you like to nominate a deserving senior?

In addition to self-nominating seniors, we also invite families, guardians and faculty to nominate a senior who is ready to take on the world.  Go here for the nomination form to share your information and the student’s email and we will send them a personal invitation to apply.

More about Wade Edwards and the WELL

Founded in 1996, the Wade Edwards Learning Lab, the WELL, was created to honor the life of an amazing young man. Wade was a high school student at Broughton High School when he died in April 1996. An honor student, a winner of national, state, and local writing awards, a high school athlete and editor of the yearbook, and a cherished friend, Wade exemplified the community’s aspirations for excellence, compassion and character.

Wade was the inspiration for the WELL, but his mother Elizabeth was the creative force behind it all. Elizabeth Edwards worked tirelessly to give youth the kind of encouragement, support, and tools they needed to reach their full potential. She established the WELL with the thought of ensuring students had what they needed to succeed, to become the best version of themselves.
